Weekly menu
We’ve never been much into planning weekly menus. But a month ago we decided to give it a serious try. Every Sunday morning after breakfast I look through my cookbooks and browse the net for inspiration. After discussing back and forth with my husband we decide the meals for the coming week. A grocery list is written and then we go grocery shopping.
I have to say that so far we’re sticking to the plan pretty well. It’s great to only have to go shopping once a week, in some periods we’ve been planning for only 1-3 days ahead and that was quite stressful and time consuming since we had to shop quite often. To make it more fun we’ve bought a blackboard and a liquid chalk pen so we can put the menu on display. I want to believe that it actually helps us to stick to the planned menu and it makes you look forward to the meals as it reminds you every time you pass by.
This week we’re eating:
-
Mon: Spicy lamb patties in pita bread with salad and yoghurt.
Tue: Tom Ka Ga with duck ( with roasted duck left overs from Sunday).
Wed: Spicy chorizo potatoes with fried egg.
Thu: Homemade pasta with tomato sauce.
Fri: Take out.
Sat: Chicken skewers with amazing satay sauce.
Sun: Teriyaki Salmon. Polish apple pancakes (racuchy z jablkami) for dessert.

Du skriver ju grymt snyggt också! Och ett gulligt citat i slutet. :-)

This is a great idea to write down the menu on a blackboard!!

I know what you mean about planning a week’s worth of meals: While it does require some time planning at the beginning, it saves the frustration that can come in the evening when one is hungry but hasn’t thought about what to cook, not to mention saving time shopping. Good luck with your planning as the weeks go on! It’s a worthy endeavor.

Great idea – and a lovely blackboard!!! I’ve been planning weekly menus occasionally, but could do much better. We’ve actually just painted a whole kitchen wall with the blackboard paint. Perhaps I should use that for scribbling down weekly menus instead of just party menus :)

Alissa: Do try the Polish pancakes, they are lovely!
Markus: Å, tack :-) Kul att det fungerar med kassarna. Vi har funderat på det, men har inte vågat hittills av rädsla för att vi skall få grejer som vi inte gillar :-)
Katarina: And it’s fun too!
D: Thank you! It helping us a lot!
Pille: ! I love the idea of having a whole kitchen wall with blackboard paint! I’m sure it looks great!

Hi Dagmar, I follow your blog for some time and I really liked this menu idea, in fact i was just discussing that with my husband yesterday and here it is on your blog :) I love the blackboard idea, and wanted to ask where did you buy yours? I live in Copenhagen so I will try to find one here:) But I have relatives in Stockholm so maybe they could get me one over there too:)

Hi Danijela!
We bought the blackboard for 129 SEK at Granit. You’ll find it here: http://www.granit.se/?id=657
The chalk pen (much easier to write with than a real chalk) was 49 SEK.

I tried weekly menu once but then I found it difficult to follow as sometimes we were fancy something else or simply I didn’t have time to do what was in menu.
But maybe I try it again one day:)

I’ve been doing this for a while and love it. We also plan on Sundays and then I do the shop on Monday. But here’s an extra tip that helps … I keep a list of our favorite meals. Divided into columns: chicken, fish, other meat (lamb, pork, etc), vegetarian … and whatever. Each column has our favorite meals that fit. I’m about to split it into spring / summer and fall / winter to make life even easier as we enjoy the heartier soups and stews in the colder months and lighter meals in the warmer seasons.
